Mawai Village Cultural Center

The Mawai Village Project is an adaptive-reuse development that draws from the site’s natural setting and cultural character to create a contemporary village-inspired retreat. Formerly an underutilised workers’ quarters, the existing buildings are carefully refurbished and transformed into resort accommodation, with much of the original structure retained as the foundation of the new design. Rather than replacing the past, the project builds upon it, introducing new spaces and interventions that respond sensitively to the scale, memory and material character of the site.

The planning adopts a clustered arrangement, with guestrooms and shared facilities organised around a central indoor courtyard. This courtyard forms the social and spatial heart of the resort, bringing daylight, greenery and views of nature into the surrounding interiors while encouraging interaction among guests. An adjoining outdoor patio acts as a transitional zone between enclosed and open spaces, softening the boundary between architecture and landscape and allowing the communal areas to extend naturally into the outdoors.

The façades are animated by a playful composition of windows, reflecting the energy and irregularity of the surrounding landscape. Their varied placement frames selected views, introduces natural light and creates moments of visual connection between the interior and its rural context. The architectural language remains deliberately restrained, combining clean contemporary forms with warm, rustic textures to establish a distinctive modern village identity without competing with the natural environment.

Through the careful reinterpretation of the original buildings, the Mawai Village Project demonstrates how adaptive reuse can create a meaningful hospitality experience rooted in place. The development offers visitors a comfortable and characterful retreat while preserving the site’s existing fabric and strengthening its relationship with the surrounding landscape. The result is a contemporary resort that feels both renewed and familiar—an architecture shaped by continuity, nature and local identity.
