Care Haven Cultural Center

The Care Haven Homestay-Orphanage is a collaborative charitable initiative between SFS Architecture and Exhale Malaysia, an architectural design practice based in Johor and Singapore. The original design concept was developed by Exhale Malaysia and subsequently refined by SFS Architecture to address local planning, building and statutory requirements. Conceived as more than a residential facility, the project combines a nurturing home environment with a community-based hospitality model intended to support the long-term wellbeing and independence of the children in its care.

Set on a 2.11-acre site, the building occupies only a modest portion of the overall land, allowing the remaining areas to support eco-farming, outdoor activities and homestay operations. This low-density arrangement establishes a close relationship between the building and its natural surroundings while enabling the site to function as a productive landscape. By integrating accommodation, agriculture and community-oriented activities, the project creates opportunities for both self-sufficiency and meaningful interaction with visitors.

The architecture is shaped by principles of economy, adaptability and environmental responsiveness. Locally sourced exposed and reclaimed bricks give the building a warm, tactile identity while helping to reduce construction costs—an important consideration for a project largely supported through fundraising. A centralised open-plan layout is organised around an internal courtyard, allowing daylight and natural ventilation to reach the surrounding spaces. The courtyard also serves as the social heart of the development, encouraging communal living while creating a calm and secure environment.

Care Haven is envisioned not only as a safe and comfortable home, but also as a platform for education, personal development and sustainable livelihood. Through eco-agriculture, hospitality operations and shared community programmes, the project aims to equip its residents with practical skills, confidence and greater opportunities for the future. The development reflects the shared commitment of SFS Architecture and Exhale Malaysia to responsible design—demonstrating how thoughtful planning, resource efficiency and social purpose can come together to create architecture with lasting value.
