The Key Power Motor Car Showroom is a refurbishment project that transforms a former open shelter into a contemporary two-storey used car showroom. Located along Jalan Kebun Teh in Taman Kebun Teh—one of Johor Bahru’s established and historically significant used car districts—the project is operated by Key Power Motor Sdn Bhd, a well-recognised name within the pre-owned automotive industry.
The design departs from conventional typologies typically associated with second-hand car dealerships, instead proposing a more refined and contemporary architectural expression. A fully open ground-floor plan establishes a continuous spatial field that allows vehicles to be displayed without visual interruption, while a transparent glass façade to the upper level frames the interior activity with clarity and precision. This openness not only maximises visibility from the street but also creates a strong visual dialogue between the showroom and its urban surroundings.
The architectural language is defined by lightness and transparency, where glass becomes the primary medium of expression. Natural light is drawn deep into the interior, enhancing the presentation of vehicles and creating a bright, gallery-like atmosphere. The upper-level glazing provides elevated viewing angles, allowing the cars to be experienced as curated objects within a carefully composed spatial setting.
Environmental sensitivity is woven into the design through the integration of greenery and daylight, softening the industrial character of the programme and introducing a more welcoming spatial experience. These elements work together to elevate the overall atmosphere, ensuring comfort while reinforcing a sense of openness and clarity throughout the showroom.
Through this intervention, the Key Power Motor Car Showroom redefines the identity of a traditionally utilitarian typology. It demonstrates how contemporary architectural thinking can elevate commercial function, transforming a used car showroom into a spatially engaging and visually refined experience that reflects both modern design values and the evolving expectations of its users.
