Muar Supermarket is a strategically located commercial development along Jalan Bakri, one of the busiest arterial routes in Muar. Positioned within a high-traffic urban corridor, the project comprises two distinct buildings—an F&B-focused food court and a refurbished supermarket that was formerly a car showroom, now reimagined as the primary frontage of the development.
The architectural strategy is grounded in spatial openness and operational flexibility. The supermarket is organised as an open-plan volume with mezzanine levels, allowing for a highly adaptable retail environment that accommodates diverse tenant configurations. This spatial generosity enhances usability while maintaining a clear and legible structural order, enabling the building to respond fluidly to evolving commercial demands.
A key design gesture lies in the adaptive reuse of the existing showroom structure. Rather than erasing its industrial past, the original steel framework and metal roofing are retained and celebrated as part of the architectural identity. This existing fabric is carefully reinterpreted through the insertion of glass curtain walls and perforated metal mesh, which refine the building’s envelope while introducing a sharper, more contemporary visual language.
The interplay between transparency and solidity defines the façade expression. Expansive glazing introduces daylight deep into the interior, producing a bright and inviting retail atmosphere, while also reinforcing visual connectivity between inside and the surrounding urban context. The layered façade system enhances depth and texture, transforming the building into a more dynamic and articulated commercial presence along the street edge.
Rather than relying solely on functional efficiency, the design also seeks to establish a strong visual identity within the commercial district. The fusion of industrial character and contemporary architectural intervention produces a distinctive urban landmark—one that respects its inherited structure while projecting a renewed commercial vitality. In doing so, Muar Supermarket becomes a catalyst for reinvigoration along Jalan Bakri, bridging past typologies with a more progressive retail future.
