The ‘Courtyard House I’ is a reinterpretation of traditional Chinese courtyard house – ‘Siheyuan’ using modern design approach. A centralized organization of spaces is proposed with a central courtyard acting as the focal point of the layout, clustered with three blocks of buildings – Common block, family block and guest block, all of which are connected to a featured dining hall, and serving their distinct functions for the residents. Each block is provided with ample opportunities to interact with the lush greenery at the center while also having visual connections with other blocks. The courtyard house design also ensures the privacy of the residents, where visitors are not immediately introduced into the house but through a natural corridor.
The concept of ‘five elements’ from traditional Chinese philosophy are also incorporated into the design. Among them is a ‘dougong’ style roof design incorporated into the structures, enhanced with vertical wooden claddings on the façade walls and columns as well as water features and swimming pool. The result is a modernized courtyard houses expressing the rich Chinese cultural heritage of a ‘Siheyuan’ design specifically crafted for the residents.
