The Care Haven Homestay-orphanage is a collaborative charity project between SFS Architecture and Exhale Malaysia, an architectural design firm based in Johor and Singapore, with the main design concept proposed by Exhale and improved by SFS for building code compliance. The building is proposed for the Care Haven orphanage as a homestay-orphanage hybrid, thus providing a safe haven for the orphans and a mean to sustain themselves.
Proposed for the Care Haven orphanage, the homestay is situated on top of a land spanning across an area of 2.11 acre, with its footprint roughly one eighth of the entire site. This allow the orphanage to utilize the vast land for eco farming and homestay operation, realizing the concept of a homestay-orphanage hybrid. The building is proposed with an architectural identity of using exposed and reused bricks that are sourced locally, saving on the construction cost which is mostly fundraised. Sustainability is taken into account with a centralized open layout and central courtyard, facilitating natural cross ventilation throughout the homestay. The project seeks to become a safe haven for the orphans and a mean to sustain themselves.
